Voice biometrics: securing the enterprise 

This data could be used to perpetrate fraud. Amanda Traynor, SVP, sales for North America, VoiceTrust, believes voice biometrics can prevent such fraud from taking place. She discussed the security advantages of voice biometrics and highlighted its ease of use and affordability.

“Voice biometric systems are proving to be an alternative that is both convenient and secure for all involved,” Traynor commented. “Out of all biometrics, it is arguably the easiest and most cost-effective to implement, especially for remote authentication scenarios.”

This type of biometrics relies on the human voice, which is one of the most secure forms of identification available. “With voice biometrics, your voice cannot be stolen, lost, or shared,” Traynor pointed out. “A voice is extremely difficult to forge for biometrics comparison purposes, since a myriad of qualities are measured including dialect, speaking style, pitch, spectral magnitudes and format frequencies. The vibration of a user’s vocal chords and the patterns created by the physical components resulting in human speech are as distinctive as fingerprints.”

When a company uses voice biometrics to authenticate its customers, it can be assured that its clients are who they say they are. “The positive characteristics of voice biometrics compared to other means of biometric measurement contribute to a multi-factor authentication mechanism offering a higher degree of certainty that an acceptance is correct,” Traynor said.

The uniqueness of the human voice makes it incredibly difficult to replicate and impossible to steal, unlike passwords or the answers to security questions. “This differs from knowledge-based authentication questions such as your mom’s maiden name, date of birth, etc. and fraudsters typically use knowledge-based authentication questions to pretend they are someone else,” Traynor remarked.

A voice biometrics solution can also catch criminals in the act. “Voice biometrics allow a person’s voice to be compared against a database or blacklist of known fraudster voices, triggering a warning if there is a match,” Traynor explained. “Attempts to impersonate a voice or provide voice recordings to gain fraudulent authentication fail due to the distinctive details of the voiceprint used for comparison.”

Traynor added that businesses can implement voice biometrics solutions for a variety of purposes. “Voice biometrics are easy to use even in remote authentication situations,” she commented. “End users do not have to install any devices or software to participate in the authentication process. The familiarity of the telephone device makes it possible for users to comfortably interact with the voice biometric application without any additional training.”

Moreover, voice biometrics save companies money. “Voice biometrics are cost-effective to implement,” Traynor remarked. Using voice biometrics to authenticate customers shaves an average of 20 seconds off the time it takes to verify them with existing methods. In addition, customers feel less frustrated by voice biometrics to identify themselves, which means they will stay loyal to the company and possibly recommend their friends and families to do business with the organization.

Another example of voice biometrics’ cost-effectiveness is automating password resets. A significant number of calls to help desks are about resetting passwords. These calls cost time and money. Automating password reset phone calls saves companies financial and employee resources. It also reduces inbound requests to help desks.

Criminals will always be lurking, waiting to steal from innocent people and companies. While voice biometrics do not promise to eradicate the criminal element entirely, it can prevent expensive losses to consumers and businesses alike.
