Initially released in 1996, the 8110 was the first in the series of Nokia’s high-end phones. Its sliding cover which brought the microphone closer to the mouth, ergonomic shape and LCD screen, made others envious of the owner of this phone. Added to these features, a hefty price tag of about $1000 kept this device in a market segment that is beyond aspiring cell phone users of the day.
This phone was made famous in The Matrix with Keanu Reeves. There was a scene when Reeves received a FedEx package with the phone. Immediately after opening the envelope and removing it, the phone rang. Morpheus was on the line giving Thomas Anderson aka Neo (Keanu Reeves) details on how to escape from his office. That may have jagged some memories, if not, take a look at the video.
HDM Global, which has the license to manufacture Nokia phones, is looking to bring back the excitement from over 20 years ago with the new Nokia 8110. The new phone is running off KaiOS that is called “Smart Feature OS” and comes equipped with 4G capability.
According to HMD Global, you can expect the same craftsmanship in the new 8110 as in previous Nokia phones. It will deliver durability and reliability and provide the familiar interface. It will also feature “intuitive tactile mechanics, with slide to answer and end calls, as well as an addictive helicopter style spin on its axis.”
The company is selling the reloaded 8110 as a “weekend phone” for people to relax and have fun while still having the “essentials” of a smartphone with them.
