Symantec debuts updated version of NetBackup

Symantec debuts updated version of NetBackup

With data sets growing more and more rapidly each year, enterprises can no longer rely on traditional backup methods to protect their data. Many enterprises operate 24/7, leaving little time for IT administrators to run lengthy backup processes, most of which would ideally be carried out overnight or on weekends.

NetBackup addresses this issue by providing fast, automated application protection, insight into virtual environments, and enabling partners and service providers to deliver backup-as-a-service.

Since NetBackup boots directly from backup storage, it provides 400 times faster recovery of VMware vSphere virtual machines, cutting restore time from hours or days down to minutes. Additionally, virtual machines can be powered from within NetBackup using NetBackup Instant Recovery for VMware environments, making them available in vSphere during the restore.

NetBackup Accelerator for VMware also eliminates the need for full backups, thanks to integration with VMware Changed Block Tracking, allowing for a complete backup that is 35 times faster than traditional methods.

“Enterprises will never have to run a full backup ever again,” said Glen Simon, senior product marketing manager, Symantec. “It’s a dramatic backup reduction time.

Other features include the NetBackup Replication Director for VMware, which allows administrators to protect 300 virtual machines within 300 seconds using NetApp array-based snapshots; disaster recovery from a physical to a cloud platform; and multi-tenant hosting options for channel partners and MSPs.

“Data growth, complications from virtual machine sprawl and stagnant IT budgets have increased demand for backup solutions that protect, automate and efficiently manage data center environments. Symantec and NetApp have a long history of partnering to deliver innovative solutions that solve these pressing data management challenges. The combined strengths of NetApp storage and Symantec NetBackup software enable customers to improve data protection service levels and reduce operational costs,” said Edward Sharp, VP, Integrated Data Protection, NetApp.

NetBackup is currently available through Symantec’s channel partners or the company directly.
