Microsoft adds laptop to its Surface family

Microsoft adds laptop to its Surface family

At first glance, you’d get the impression that the Surface Laptop is set to compete with the Google Chromebook as it comes with a lower version of Windows 10, called the Windows 10 S, but that is not the case as you will see later.

Since the Windows 10 S is a lighter version of Windows 10, it is more “streamlined for security and superior performance” by allowing apps only from the Windows Store to be downloaded. This ensures that security is kept intact and apps run locally in a safe “container” providing a stable performance with fast login times and quick booting.

This version of Windows is part of an educational package from Microsoft to bring a whole new experience to the classroom with new features in Minecraft and mixed reality.

Windows 10 S offers the power to run the full version of Office 365 and Microsoft Edge, making it easier for students to manage school projects. Also, with Windows Ink in Microsoft Edge, users can make notes on a web page which can then be shared with others.

In the coming months, Microsoft partners like Acer, ASUS, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, Samsung, and Toshiba will also offer Windows 10 S devices ranging from affordable to premium and powerful devices.

Now back to the Surface Laptop, even with the lower version of Windows 10 S and being positioned for students, this laptop, priced at $999 USD is not your usual Chromebook. For just $49, a buyer can upgrade the operating system to Windows 10 Pro which opens the avenue to install any application and software outside of the Windows Store. This then places the Surface Laptop as a direct competitor to the MacBook Air by not just targeting students but business users as well.

The Surface Laptop, according to Panos Panay, Corporate Vice President for Microsoft Devices is “a meticulously crafted laptop that is tailored for Windows 10 S” because they “took all of the innovations from Surface

and brought them together” in creating the Surface Laptop.

By looking at the specs we can see that this is exactly what Microsoft did, at 2.76lbs and 14.47mm at its thickest point, this laptop is lighter and thinner than the MacBook Air and comes with a sleek design and a battery life of up to 14.5 hours which outlasts the Apple laptop. It has a brilliant 13.5-inch PixelSense display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3, the thinnest LCD touch screen display on any laptop according to Microsoft.

The Surface Laptop comes with a 7th Generation Intel Core processor and the Alcantara-covered keyboard which is spill-resistant and is easy to clean. This device is available in Platinum, Graphite Gold, Burgundy and Cobalt Blue colours and is available as a pre-order starting today in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand and in Europe but not in Canada as yet.
