HP thinks small with new Mini Desktop

HP thinks small with new Mini Desktop

HP has announced a new mini desktop as part of CES 2015 in Las Vegas that they hope will change the way people use home computers. The Pavilion Mini Desktop and the Stream Mini Desktop are smaller, more energy-efficient and stylish than your traditional tower home PCs.

For starters, they weigh only 1.6 pounds, measure 53.2 mm tall and us just 45W of power – an average tower draws 250W.

It is similar to Apple’s Mac mini, but will retail for far less.

“The desktop tower PC continues to be a focal point in the home for sharing, creating, and entertaining,” said Mike Nash, vice president, product management with HP. “The HP Pavilion and HP Stream Mini Desktops deliver the benefits of a traditional desktop PC in a package that looks good sitting on a desk and is small enough to fit into an entertainment center.”

HP is betting that consumers want a refined desktop PC to complement their homes without creating more clutter – hence the Pavilion’s ability to fit in the palm of a hand. These could open up a number of possibilities with regards to home entertainment and display options.

The Mini desktop is Windows 8.1 enabled and can support processors up to Intel Core i3. It also has 1 TB of storage, up to 8 GB of expandable memory, dual display support, 4 USB ports and HDMI compatible ports. The units are fully compatible with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

It does not include an optical or CD drive. Which allowed HP to keep the product smaller but may cause some day-to-day headaches when doing things like installing software.

The HP Pavilion Mini Desktop and HP Stream Mini Desktop are expected to be available in the United States on January 14, 2015, Canadian availability is yet to be determined. The HP Pavilion Mini Desktop starting price is $319.99 (U.S) and it includes an Intel Pentium 3558U processor, 4 GB RAM and a 500 GB Hard Disk Drive (HDD). The HP Stream Mini Desktop starting price of $179.99 (U.S.) includes Intel Celeron 2957U processor, 2 GB RAM and a 32 GB SSD.

Both come bundled with keyboard and mouse.
