Businesses unprepared for Internet of Things: Spiceworks

The study, titled “The Devices are Coming”, was conducted in April 2014 and polled over 440 respondents, 62 per cent of which were based in North America and the rest in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Seventy-one per cent of respondents said they believe the IoT will have a significant impact on both business and consumers, yet 59 per cent of respondents said they are not preparing for it.

Nevertheless, of the businesses that are preparing, 68 per cent are actively investing in infrastructure, 63 per cent are putting security solutions in place and 55 per cent are increasing bandwidth to accommodate the influx of connected devices.

More than 25 per cent of respondents admitted they don’t know how they’ll manage the increase in devices, though 43 per cent said they will set up a separate network for the devices. Twenty-three percent said they would put the devices on the existing corporate network.

Over half of respondents believe that the number of devices will increase in the next five years.

“The data technology trends we’ve seen emerge over the past few years, like BYOD, coupled with the IoT will have a dramatic impact on how IT professionals do their jobs,” said Kathryn Pribish, program manager, Voice of IT, Spiceworks. “IT professionals understand the inevitability of the IoT but the reality is, though the impact will be gradual, resource-strained IT departments and others who haven’t jumped on the IoT bandwagon will be playing catch-up if they don’t adequately prepare.”
