Initially launched for its users in Indonesia, BlackBerry’s new BBM Money mobile wallet service is optimized for payments in participating stores and online. It takes advantage of the company’s high level of security, and will be compatible with BlackBerry10, Android and Apple iOS smartphones.
“By combining our DNA around security, and the real-time collaboration and privacy attributes of BBM, we are uniquely placed in the growing mobile payments space,” John Sims, president of global enterprise services for BlackBerry said in a press release. “These new mobile payments partnerships demonstrate how we have effectively evolved BBM from the best real-time chat experience to a true social engagement and e-commerce platform. Whether it’s sending pictures and files to groups or contacts; sharing their location or sending money or airtime – all from within the BBM app – our users’ real-time engagement experience will continue to get richer.”
BBM Money integrates TransferTo technology into its system, enabling users to transmit prepaid mobile credit to friends and relatives worldwide. Developed by Monitise and managed by PermataBank, BBM Money was originally released on a trial basis in 2013. The new version will be officially launched in 2015.
