BlackBerry beefs up mobile cybersecurity for governments

The Waterloo, Ont.-based technology announced the rollout of SecuSuite for Government. The company said the offering which is part of the BlackBerry Secure platform, is the only National Information Assurance Partnership (NIAP)-certified solution in the market which supports iOS, Android and BlackBerry 10 smartphones and tablets.

SecuSuite for Government is BlackBerry´s first secure mobile voice product listed on both the NIAP Product Compliant List (PCL) and NSA Commercial Solutions for Classified Program (CSfC) List.

The NIAP is responsible for U.S. implementation of the Common Criteria and oversees evaluations of commercial IT products for use in national security systems. The products on the NIAP PCL comply with the requirements of the NIAP program and are evaluated and accredited for conformance to the Common Criteria.

The CSfC provides government agencies with a list of components vetted against a framework that satisfies the U.S. National Security Agency’s security requirements and allows commercial products to be used in layered solutions to protect classified information.

The latest government-focused BlackBerry cybersecurity solution will help government agencies safeguard sensitive conversations against electronic eavesdropping, said Alex Thurber, SVP and general manager of mobility solutions at BlackBerry.

“Call tapping is happening at an alarming rate,” he said. “In today’s connected world, restricting agency employees to only exchange classified information from the desk phone is no longer a viable option, but it could be the new reality if governments don’t start securing calls and texts from mobile devices.”

SecuSuite for Government is secured with strong data-in-transit (DIT) and data-at-rest (DAR) encryption. It can support dual layers of encryption across all data channels, complies with SUITE B cryptography requirements, supports FIPS 140-2 validated keystores and has obtained the following Common Criteria certifications based on NIAP Protection Profiles:

  • Protection Profile for VoIP Applications v.1.3 (VoIP PP)
  • Collaborative Protection Profile for Network Devices v.1.0 (ND cPP)

SecuSuite for Government is hosted on-premises. This provides full control to the customer. It delivers secure calls over carrier networks the same as secure calls over Wi-Fi. Because it works across all networks, there is no need to lock an organization into a single carrier, according to BlackBerry.
