BlackBerry made the announcement on June 18, but users will not be able to access the new app store until the launch of the new BlackBerry 10.3 operating system sometime this fall.
But the company says its users will benefit greatly from being able to use apps like Groupon, Netflix, Pinterest, Candy Crush Saga and Minecraft.
“Making the Amazon Appstore available on BlackBerry 10 devices will help BlackBerry continue to meet two essential needs: greater app availability for our smartphone users and enhanced productivity solutions for enterprises,” said John Chen, BlackBerry Executive Chairman and CEO. “We’ve listened to our customers and have taken this important step to deliver on their needs, while executing on our strategy.”
Currently BlackBerry says they are working with Amazon to migrate their apps to the appstore and increase ‘discoverability and profitability.’ Features said to be included are Appstore Developer Select, a feature that allows enhanced merchandising, Amazon Coins incentives, real-time pricing adjustments and specials, and the Free App of the Day program.
